Did you know that foam is used for...

Polyurethanes can be manufactured in an extremely wide range of grades and densities(6kg/m3 to over 1000kg/m3) and harnesses from very soft and flexible to rigid hard plastics.  Below is a list of polyurethane products in a descending order:

The History of Foam

The chemistry urethanes backdate to 1849 when Wurtz and Hoffman first reported the reaction between isocyanates and hydroxys. Only in 1937 did Otto Bayer find a commercial use for the product. 

World War II created a major shortage of essential materials which prompted the development of urethanes to substitute nylons and initially, all development was done with polyester polyols which created poor physical properties.

This forced the polyurethane industry to look into alternative hydroxy compounds.
